Tricycle John Deere
How rare is a 1965 John Deere 4020 gas with a narrow (tricycle) front end?
I have a 1965 John Deere 4020 gas that has a tricycle front end. How rare do you think it is, becasue I have never seen one like ours. I have seen a few gas 4020′s but they all had wide front ends. I have seen a few narrow front end diesel 4020′s to but none like mine. ALSO do you think it would be better if I put a wide front end on it?
The only JD 4020′s I have seen were Diesel. I would prefer a diesel above gas myself,especially from the 60′s. It depends on what you are planning on doing with it if you want to change the front end. The narrow tricycle front end was used for planting row crops like corn, or using a pesticide sprayer system when in some cases, the tractor was elevated six to eight feet off the ground to avoid disturbing the crop. The wider solid axle front end would of been more for plowing,cultivating,disking and would give better steering capability under heavy work conditions. Unless you plan on using the JD for heavy work, I would just leave the front end the way it is. Sounds like a nice piece you have. Good luck.
