Tricycle Definition
Specification for motor tricycle in Greece?
Please. Does anyone know, or know where I can find, the legal definition of a “motor-tricycle” in Greece. If possible I would also like to find out the legal requirements for roadworthiness testing and licensing.
The name for those vehicles in Greek is “trikiklo or trikiklo ochima” and during the past 50 years there were many different kinds of them.
In the early 50′s there were tricycles with a loading area at the back on an axel with two wheels. Those were powered by 50cc engines of German origin under the name of Zundapp. Later on the Sachs engines were introduced followed soon after by Florett engines.
Soon the 100 cc engines were used.Occasionally, some can be seen around Athens.
About this time the bigger BMW bicycles were fitted with side-cars for transportation purposes mainly. Later, for passengers too.
Some, are still running in Greece and their are a sight of the past.
Those same BMW bicycles were fitted with cars at the back for transporting goods, and on account of the bigger horsepower they were in use widely for many years up to late 70′s when the same kind of tricycle of Mazda replaced most of them with even more horsepower. Their licences were given only to transport professionals for replacing the BMW’s and those were later replaced with lorries of 1 ton load.
The permits and licences for using them were issued by the Police for the under the 99 cc engines and by the Ministry of transport for the 100 cc and over.
For the last 15-20 years Piaggio introduced a series of tricycles of both under and over the 100cc engines that are still used mostly in islands on account of the small streets they are used in.
A mechanical enginner will have to approve and endorse all specifications of a custom made tricycle. The lisence for it will be issued by the Ministry of Transport authorities.
You could ask at a KTEO office for specifications or for people who can help you.
