What kind of bike should I buy to participate in my first triathlon?

I am taking part in my first sprint triathlon in June. I have started my training but need to buy a bike. I am female, but I prefer a man’s bike. Would this be appropriate? Can I use a mountain bike? Can you recommend a make and model? I don’t want to spend too much and may even try and source a good second hand model. Also I’m 5ft 5″, what size bike will I need? Thanks!

First, you can ride any kind of bike you want just be aware there will be many people there on bikes that cost as much as $5000 or more. But, everyone has a first race. There is no need to spend a ton on something you might not do again. There are no rules against most bikes but check with the race officials or director ahead of time to be sure. If you know the race you’re doing they should have contact info.

Do you have a bike now? If so, get it tuned up and use it for the race. If not, start looking at eBay or your local Craigslist. Look for time trial bikes.

I’m not sure if there are any Tri specific bikes made for women. Modern frames are really suitable for men or women so I wouldn’t worry about that.

For sizing look at the link below and measure yourself. That will help you find the right frame but you’ll need to tweak the seatpost, saddle and other adjustments.

If you want to buy a brand new bike, look at Quintana Roo, Cervelo, or Felt. Cervelo has several different models of TT bikes. Look online at Competitive Cyclist or All Three Sports for more info.
