So what is a tandem bicycle?
Tandem bicycle: The seating arrangement for a tandem bicycle is fore to aft and not side by side. They are designed to be ridden by two or more people.
The first patents for tandems are from the latter part of the 19th century. Mikael Pederson designed and built a two-rider version of the tandem about 1898, this was his Pedersen bicycle which weighed in at 24 pounds. He later designed a four rider or quad which weighed around 64 pounds.

Tandems have been built for three called triplets, four called quads or quadruplets and for five are called quintuplets or quints. The number is only limited by the desire of the riders. I have seen a picture of a tandem built for ten riders and there could be tandems built for more riders.
The idea of riding tandem is being together on a ride, or more pedal power to get you where you want to go faster.
The popularity has risen and fallen throughout the century. More older adult couples enjoy tandem bicycles and young families can ride a tandem bicycle and add a tandem onto their bicycle for a child or they can add a cart to pull along for long rides with a cooler or a tent.
