Padded Bicycle Shorts

How many miles can my dog run with me safely?

We got a new dog about 3 weeks ago. She is a lab/shepherd mix. I have trained her to heal and run along side my bicycle.

Running is a great exercise for dogs. But here are a couple of things to think about:

1) You may want to avoid running her constantly on asphalt, at least until she is about 2 years old. Dogs continue to develop their bones until this age and running consistently on a hard surface could adversely affect their skeletal development. Instead, I would run her on dirt or grass.

2) As one other poster said, heat stroke in dogs is something you have to watch out for. Run your dog during the cooler part of the day (early morning or night but watch the temps!) and make it a practice to hydrate your dog at least about an hour or two BEFORE you go on a 5-mile run. Get her to drink about a cup or two of water (note: don’t do it sooner than an hour before you run). One way of doing this is by “baiting” the water with chicken broth or crumbled up biscuits.

3) Most dogs love to run….but make sure you always monitor her specially since puppies tend to be more gungho and do not know how to pace themselves.
