Which motor kit should I buy for a motorized bicycle build?

I am looking into building a motorized bicycle from an engine kit. If there is anyone out there who has done this, i would really appreciate any tips you could provide. I want to use a beach cruiser style bike, and a 50cc engine kit. The areas that i am concerned about, are the hand brakes, and how they will work with the clutch and the throttle.

There are motor kits on the Web. May or may not be legal depending on what State you are in. They are *all* Chinese and thus the quality is crap.

My life is worth more than a motorized bicycle, even if it was legal, which it is not in California.
