What kind of bike should I be looking for?

First of all, I can’t possibly afford a bicycle over $300. :[
I’m really clumsy, and last time I rode on a bike with really skinny wheels, I kept running into things, and had a lot of trouble keeping balance when riding on the sidewalk. (the bike couldn’t handle bumps at all)
The bike I used to have as a kid had thicker wheels, and could grip terrain a LOT better.

I have NO CLUE how to classify the type of bike I want to get though!

I am not racing, cycling, or training with this bike. It’s just to ride around town with
I need a type of bike that isn’t TOO heavy
Can ride well on sidewalks and roads
I do NOT do tricks
I only weigh 110lb so there’s no issue with how much the bike can hold
Preferably doesn’t have those handles that you have to hold at an awkward angle

Any suggestions?

The most cost effective bike for you would be a hard tail mountain bike. See if you can find one without a front suspension fork which will save weight and complexity. Don’t go to a big box store because the bikes they sell are heavy, don’t work well, and also won’t last very long. After you wear out the tires that come with the bike, put on a set of 1-1/2 inch slick tires that have a max pressure of at least 80 psi. They will make street riding easier. In most places, you shouldn’t be riding on the sidewalks but local regulations vary.

A hybrid bike will also serve you well, but you’ll get more for your money with the hard tail.
