Bike Tool Kit

Bike maintenance and tool kit (basic vs. advanced)?
What type of maintenance would you do on your bike? When (or how often) do you have LBS do a full service? What tools and skills are good long term investment to have?
I do some measure of maintenance on my bike after every ride… it varies a bit depending on what I was doing and how the weather was but generally at the very least a wipe down and a relubing of the chain. Every season, tear it all the way down to the frame and replace the pivot bearings in the suspension. Change the oil in the forks every couple months… Pull the hubs apart and regrease everything every other season… Bleed the brakes every season or when they need it. I think that’s about it. Pretty much the only things that I need the LBS to do are wheel builds… then there’s a guy locally (formerly Sam Hill’s mech actually) that does suspnesion tuning so I take my shock to him as well as my forks for anything other than an oil change.
I’d say, the more you can do to your own bike the better off you are. If you’re mechanically inclined, why pay someone else to do something you could do… Not to mention, unless you can really trust your local mech I just dont like the idea of someone else working on my bike when I know that I’ll be the one paying in blood for his screw-ups!
As for tools, you need a full hex set and preferably one with “T’ handles for comfort and ease of access if you’ll be doing a lot of labor. You’ll need a cassette tool, chain breaker tool, chain cleaner, a bottom bracket tool, a crank puller, a chain whip, spoke wrench, cone wrench set, pedal wrench, headset wrench, chain wear guage, soft headed mallet, & a good workstand.
Honestly though, there are so many good starter kits on the market I’d highly recommend you check out one of those over trying to piece together everything you want one by one. Spin Doctor I think it is makes one that regularly sells at Performance Bikes for like $130 or so that’s easily over $200 worth of tools were you to buy it seperately. They have another smaller kit that’s like $35-40 that’s a good basic kit as well.
