How do people stand on their bikes while the bike is still?
I see cyclists at intersections standing on their bikes and not fall off. i wonder why it is and how can you learn to do this? I hate mounting and dismounting every time 20 times in busy traffic.
The most common way to hold your bike in position is a “track stand.” To do a track stand you need a slight uphill grade. You want to get your pedals aligned in a 3:00 and 9:00 positions, with your strongest foot forward. As you come to a stop you turn the handlebars at about a 45 degree angle towards the slope. You will find the bike leans very slightly towards the incline as well. Then with very minimal pressure on the pedals you will find you can rock the bike back and forth and balance in a more or less stationary fashion. When you get really good, you’ll be able to hold the position with no rocking back and forth.
As you can imagine, it is best to practice with flat pedals and no traffic. Trying to unclip as you are heading toward the pavement is, at best, disconcerting. Practicing on grass is always a good way to begin.
