Bike Lube
please advice me which engine oil should i use and which chain lube ( bike has O-ring chain)?
i bought yamaha fz-s in october 2009. Till now 4 free services have been done and i have only travelled 3400 kms. Now i m thinking to not go for free services .Instead of this i am planning to gor for service after every 2500 kms from a good mechanic. So please advice me which engine oil should i use and which chain lube ( bike has O-ring chain). And also please tell me that after how much time or kms should i change the engine oil , air filter , doing chain lubricant and service .
Engine oil: Stick with a well known brand like Castrol GTX. Probably a 5-30 viscosity. Replace with oil filter every 5 to 6 thousand miles. Keep an eye on your levels though as overtime engine oil burns of and reduces. So you will have to top up from time to time.
Chain lube: I use a chain wax. It comes in a spray can but it’s absoluely brilliant and protects you agains road salt too. Can get a bit messy though. Spray that on once a week. Every 6 months clean the chain with parafin and re apply the wax. Ajust chain when required because it will stretch.
Air filter: Buy a K&N filter. It is about 20 quid more than a standard filter but will last the life of the bike plus they come with a lifetime warranty. You may need to hoover the crap out every 10k miles or so.
Also,
Spark plugs will need to be changed or cleaned too, every 5 to 6k miles to keep you running smooth.
