Why are things so much cheaper on Amazon.com?
Recently, I looked for a new lock for my bike. I found a strong, well reviewed Kryptonite lock online, and decided to look into prices. I did a Google search on it, and saw on Amazon it was $52.50 After that, I checked my local bike and accsesories retailer and saw that the same lock was $99.99! Extremely confused, I decided to look into this, and found that many people had wondered the same thing, but with different products. For each question about each product, there was a different reason for why it was so much cheaper on Amazon. I would like someone to summarize in nice broad terms why this website has things for such better prices than if I were to buy the same items at a store such as Walmart, Target etc…
online shops are cheaper to maintain.
You still have to pay for:
1. servers, (huge) internet traffic
2. IT support
But you save $$ for:
1. rent for the shops – 10 servers can fit in 1 small room, and can serve ~100 customers per second. Imagine 100 customers in 1 room
2. salaries – you still pay for people standing in front of the PCs, but again 1 man can support several servers (thousands of customers per day), and 1 salesman in the shop can stand for only a few hundreds customers/day (or less than 100), so you will need to hire more guys for the same ammount of customers
