Where do i lube my bicycle….Where do i grease?
I have a bike and I am planning to tweak and tune it up soon. This would be my first time lubing this bike. Where are all the points where I can apply lubricant (I bought finish line dry teflon lubricant)?? Where do I apply Bicycle Grease?? And where should I use degreaser before lubing/greasing??
Finish Line Dry is a great chain lube. It goes on wet, but drys so that it will not attact and hold dirt. Use it to lube your chain in the following manner.
1. Take a rag and wrap it around the chain. While holding the rag, turn the pedals backwards so the chain is pulled through the rag and is cleaned off. If your chain is nasty, keep moving the rag around until you have wiped off everything that is going to come off. (If the chain shifts to a different cog, you’ll have to turn the cranks forward a bit to get it back in position. Of course, if you have a repair stand, this is all much easier…)
2. Use the rag to clean off both sides of the two jockey wheels in the rear derailleur as you continue to rotate the pedals.
3. Use the rag to “floss” the cassette, as well.
4. Lay the rag on the floor beneath the bike chain to catch excess lube and gunk. Now apply a stream of lube to the chain as you continue to turn the cranks. I apply lube quite liberally to allow it to penetrate the inner parts of the chain and float off any remaining gunk.
5. Continue to turn the cranks and work the derailluer so that the chain shifts gears up and down the cassette a couple of times. The purpose of this is to help work the lube into the chain.
6. If your old rag is utterly nasty, find a fresh clean rag and repeat step 1. If the rag gets nasty, apply more of the Finish Line and keep wiping the chain down. At some point, the chain will be both nicely cleaned up and well lubed.
Now go for a ride! Personally, I am not a big believer in degreasers unless a chain is absolutely, horribly nasty or if I want to apply a wax lube like Finish Line Wax. (Wax lubes are not compatible with oil based lubes.)
If a chain is really nasty, I find a good mechanical chain cleaner like the one made by Parks or Pedros along with Dawn Dishwashing detergent works well. Otherwise, I mostly use a rag with Dawn Dishwashing detergent when I wash my bike and keep everything clean and shiny.
Grease is a different compound. Grease is wax impregnated with oil. Use grease on all nuts and bolts and threaded surfaces when you take stuff apart and put it back together. Grease goes on bearings, as well. The purpose of grease is to lubricate threaded surfaces and pressure bearing surfaces. Grease, however, is a dirt magnet and should never go a chain or other part exposed to dirt.
