Bicycle Tire Pressure?

I was just wondering what the different tire pressures are for on the side of a bike tire. For example on the side of my bicycle tire it says 25 – 50 PSI. Is the 25 PSI for riding on soft surfaces and the 50 PSI for harder surfaces like roads? Please could somebody tell me as I need to know, Thanks Also for everyday normal riding what pressure should it be, and what should the tire pressure be for XC racing? Thanks again

The pressure rating on the side wall is the “recommended” range. The pressure you use is a personal choice and can be based on several factors.
The first thing is to avoid pinch flats, if you ride over logs and rocks and get small pin hole sized leaks raise the pressure a few lbs to stop these.
You want enough pressure for the tire not to roll around or squirm on the rim.
You want a low enough pressure for good traction for the trail conditions.
Higher pressures may or may not be faster on hard pack trails depending on the tread and casing design.

As note: My preferred Xc race tires have a side wall rating of 45~65psi however they work best for me at 28lb front and 32rear, much lower than the factory recommendation. Every racer that I compete against that uses these tires runs them in the 26~36 lbs range and we all can’t be nuts. (or maybe we are)
