Bicycle Work Stands
Is it better to ride a bicycle standing up or sitting down?
A family member of mine likes to go on runs and I, being lazy, usually join her on a bike. We go about 6 miles in 40min. I already have had the bike in the hardest gear for months now and have become accustomed to it. I was wondering if riding while standing up would increase my workout. Since I am already going at a slow pace I’m not worried about efficiency in riding, just would I get a better workout standing up? I’ve already tried this a few times and it seemed to really make my back work. I ride a very upright hybrid.
STAND the whole time, you will get a better workout then sitting for the same distance. You will use about 10% more energy standing , or add a few changes to your ride, work on technique. Practice short sprints, let the her get ahead 100 ft and sprint to her while standing, come to a stop and do a track stand, pedal slowly then do another sprint. You can also practice on your pedaling, if you have clip-less pedals practice one legged pedaling and this would also be the perfect time to work on getting your cadence up.
