I recently read that one should NOT store a bike in the garage over the winter because the tires will dry rot. My question is: does that apply only to bikes resting on the garage floor (i.e., does a wall mounted bike rack solve this problem) or does it apply to ANY bike in the garage?
The hardest thing on tires is sun light. I have a Huffy that is always stored by using the kickstand and the 18 year old tires are OK on it.
I think I seen something on 60 minutes or something like that about auto stores selling tires that are 5 – 6 years old that they shouldn’t be selling because they get degraded.
Also seen a program on the Discovery channel about Lance Armstrong where the guy responsible for the tires used tires that were several years old because they were more efficient. He had a stock pile of tires being aged.
People used to store their cars in the winter time by putting then on blocks to get the tires off the floor.
Hanging the bike on a hook might be better if it is out of the sun. If the tire goes flat it won’t be deformed by the weight of the bike and it won’t get knocked over either.
