How can i find out the maximum weight that a bicycle wheel can carry without failing?
I am trying to determine what the maximum weight that a bicycle wheel can carry without the wheel failing. Specifically i plan to attach a trailer to the rear of the bicycle and want to know exactly how heavy i can make it. Also if it will fail i would like to know what will cause it to fail.

Your concern is unfounded.
Towing a trailer with a bike will not significantly impact the rear wheel. Let me give you an example.
When a trailer is developed, there are 2 weights that are usually considered- tongue weight which is the downward force of the trailer onto the hitch, and gross weight which is the weight of the trailer if you were to pick it up off the ground, wheels and all.
A typical 14 foot motorboat and trailer has a tongue weight of perhaps 40 pounds. This amount of downward force would have little or no effect on a bike particularly since the “hitch” is usually attached to the seat post which distributes the weight pretty evenly between the front and back wheels.
The hard part is pulling whatever weight you have uphills and keeping under control on downhills.
CycleDan is mistaken, however, on the strength of (correctly built) road wheels for touring. Their strength far exceeds anything that could be thrown at them with regards to towing or touring.
