My trainer is dumb?

So yeah, I’m some 17 year old kid and for some reason, my trainer has me fighting people twice my size and age. I am usually smiling, which is pretty weird when you consider I have that nasty trainer breathing down my neck all the time, chasing me with bicycles, and pretty much riding my coattails.

My trainer, an overweight, balding black man, pulled me through whenever I started to buckle.

When I am whining because I cant figure out how to beat a savage, he will provide me with cryptic, yet useless tips. I get my face mangled by opponents, then my trainer will gladly tell me “Don’t give up!”.

But who is he? More accurately, who was he? I’ll tell you who he was. An ex-heavyweight champion, known far and wide around 1954. A killer, a taker-aparter, a menace. But all that was before he would be forced into a life of tapping my arm and trying to ditch me by cycling away from me real fast in the roughest ghetto’s of NY.

What do I do?

I’m going to split this up into sections and answer each section (my opinion only, not solid fact)

“My trainer has me fighting people twice my age and size”

Let me put it this way, your training in NY so i assume this is as much for self defense as it is the sporting aspect. Not everyone you will have to fight will be your age and size, some will be smaller, taller, larger, shorter etc. You have to get used to fighting people of all sizes and styles if you want to be good. And honestly, in the fighting world, age doesn’t matter too much. I could be in my mid 30′s i could have only had 1 boxing match, am i at an advantage? (i’m not in my mid 30′s)

“My trainer, an overweight, balding black man, pulled me through whenever I started to buckle.”

If he’s pulling you through tough times then he can’t be all that bad. Some martial art trainers (boxing is a martial art) use similar tactics to military, they have to have some kind of wall between you and them, The only way you will learn is by being pushed to your limits, and then when you feel like you can’t go any further they will get ready to write your death warrent just to get that last 5 miles out of you, Physical barriars can be broken through, all serious trainers know this, but you cant be lovey dovey’d through there’s always some force behind it, anger, fear, pretty much the dark side of the force tbh.

Its the mental barriars where they need to act like normal human beings to get you to push through, and from that statement it sounds like you have yourself one hell of a trainer.

“When I am whining because I cant figure out how to beat a savage, he will provide me with cryptic, yet useless tips. I get my face mangled by opponents, then my trainer will gladly tell me “Don’t give up!”.”

I’ll tell you why he gives you those “cryptic yet useless tips” There isn’t always going to be somebody in your corner shouting advice, hell. If i were fighting you and i heard a guy shout out “HEY HE’S DROPPED HIS GAURD ON THE LEFT GO FOR THE HOOK” hell your hooks just become useless. Thats why its cryptic, and the tip is never useless so long as you can figure it out before your opponent. Boxing is as much mental as it is physical. If your stronger faster have better technique then your opponent, all you have let to rely on is the thing between your ears thats slowly getting damaged from the amount of punches your getting to the face

Normally trainers all have some kind of pattern to their “cryptic clues” Soon as you crack what the pattern is, it’ll be much faster to figure them out and then you can make use of them. But at the same time, if there is an opening then you should be able to spot it. And if there are no openings you have to bide your time and find and / or make one. Telling you not to give up just means you still have a chance, you just gotta use your noodle.

“who is he, etc etc cycling away”

I’ll say this now, not all great sportsman make great coaches, but from the sounds of what you described, he’s one of the ones that is. This is an out-dated method of training fighters, but its one of the best ones there is.

Also, the cycling away from you in NY bit? Your jogging your hardest, can’t get much more out of it, and he starts accelerating leaving you in a rough neighbourhood, your going to sprint to your limit and past it until your legs feel like they’re going to drop off. Its all part of the mental and physical barrier i mentioned. Its highly unlikely he’s going to leave you to get mugged by a group of thugs etc.

“what do i do?”

If he’s putting this much effort into giving you a good old school training, i’ll tell you what you do, you stick with it, you do what he tells you do do in sessions, and when they are over you go home, and you keep on training. You give 100% to this, because if an ex champ is putting this much effort in to training you he must see something, whether you do or not.

All i can say now is good luck to you.
