Bicycle Powered Generator Watts
would it be possible to power a generator?
by manual pedal power instead of a gasoline or propane engine? How hard would it be to turn say a 3000 or even a 8000 watt generator connected to a bicycle crank to provide power for portable electric heaters.
ok, now why is that? if I get one of those 8000 watt generators from say Home Depot and remove the engine and frame etc leaving the actual generator and connect a bicycle to it with reduction gears, chain etc, would it require more torque then I could produce?
Lets say for simplicity you were to use a 3000 watt generator. To convert this to mechanical units we will use the old horsepower term. 3000 watts equals (3000/746) 4 horsepower.
4 horsepower converted to foot pound-force per second equals (4*550) 2200 foot pound-force per second.Thus to produce 2200 foot pound-force per second and you were to weigh 220 pounds then you would have to exert all your weight on a pedal of 1 foot radius every second.
Thinking this through the pedalling of a bicycle requires optional push and relaxing thus the force is only applied at half the time so either the force must be doubled or the moment arm must be doubled. So a 220 pound bicycler pedalling a bicycle with a 4 foot diameter pedal range is required to reach the 3000 watt power range. Near impossible to imagine isn’t it?
