I tried to adjust my bicycle handlebars and now I can’t get them back on!?

There is a single hexagonal bolt head that I undid and withdrew a long threaded bolt that ran down into the stem. Now when I put the bolt back in I can’t tighten it up and the handlebars just move about freely. It seems there was a nut or something down there that has now moved!

Oops.

Well, you now know that yo shouldn’t have done that. The wedgethat everyone is talking about is called an expander which holds the stem in place. Hopefully it isn’t still stuck in the fork and you can turn the bike upside down to get it out.

To reinstall, put the bolt through the stem, thread the expander onto the bolt loosely- you should be able to see how the expender mates with the stem- and reinsert the stem into the fork, then tighten securely- but not too tight! Lubrication with grease is always a good idea.

Next time if you want to adjust your handlebar height loosen the bolt 2 or 3 turns only then smack it down with a piece of wood. This will release the expander and allow you to adjust the stem.
