Bicycle Inner Tubes
Do they sell bicycle inner tubes Without Talcum powder?
I did a little check on what the powder in/on bike inner tubes was, and found it was talcum powder (proven to cause cancer) .. Shame cause I was considering reusing the rubber to wrap my bike where I place my U-lock. Why do you want to buy a product that knowingly contains carcinogens? (parallels to cigarettes)
Are there any tubes sold without it?
And in the “Slime” brand tubes that seal themselves after flats, what is the green slime sealant made of? curious
Talcum won’t hurt you when it is in it’s intended use. Meaning inside the tube. If you want to re-use the tube and in your case means you have to cut the tube open for that use. Cut it with scissors slowly so you don’t stir dust and then fill it with water and a few drops of dish soap to add as wetting agent and emulsify the talc and then rinse.
Talcum powder is produced from talc, a magnesium trisilicate mineral, which in its natural form may contain asbestos, a known human carcinogen (any substance that causes cancer or helps cancer grow). Because of this association with asbestos, all home-use talcum products marketed after about 1973 – baby powders, body powders, facial powders – have been required by law to be asbestos-free. Asbestos can cause lung cancer and mesotheliomas (cancers affecting the lining surfaces of the chest and abdominal cavities).
There is no source showing evidence that the talc used in tires has asbestos or not.
I would suggest if you have that fear then handle it with care. The little amount in a inner tube is probably not a significant amount. It could be the same as home use talcum as the vast majority of talcum product is for home use. It would simply be too expensive to source non-home use talcum for use in tubes. Economy of scale.
