What is the secret to successfully steering a chopper *bicycle* (not a motorcycle)?
The angle of the front fork makes steering a tricky affair. How do you do it without eating pavement?
You just have to get used to the different feel of it. With the super-slack head angle, the front wheel will have a noticable “breakover” point where it wants to fold under quickly. A blend of body balance to the off side of the turn helps. Because the front end is so raked out, the steering is tricky but with practice it’ll feel better and you’ll have more control. Just get used to that point where the wheel wants to break and practice holding it there. When you’re steady holding it, lean your body a little to the other side and push the wheel a little further. They’re not the most agile things, but you can master them. Just takes a little time.
EDIT: Another thing came to mind after I posted this. A BIG part of steering/cornering is simply leaning the bike to the side. Turning the handlebars is natural, but once you get the hang of leaning you’ll be amazed. It can really help with a slack-head bike like yours. Try it out….on a good surface, get moving at a medium clip and lean the bike to the side with only a very slight turn on the handlebars. See how it carves into a turn? I’ve gotten to where I can turn pretty tight just by leaning, and use the bars to fine tune or correct when needed. Pretty handy on dirt trails but just plain fun on pavement!
