How often should I oil my bicycle chain?
A lot of maintenance tips suggest that I oil the chain (and other parts of the drivetrain) weekly. But I bought a fancy “huile de chaine” from my LBS that says “1000+ miles between applications” on the label. So I’m not sure what to do. Should I be oiling w/ one kind of oil weekly and this other kind every thousand miles, or what?
It depends on how much mileage you do. I’d be very surprised at chain oil actually being able to last for that long, I really would.
Personally I’d just go for the standard stuff and put in on once a week or so. My cleaning routine is approximately this:
1) Degrease chain and any other components
2) Get squirty cleaner stuff and apply liberally to bike
3) Wipe off all large surface areas with an old rag to remove dirt/dust
4) Use an old toothbrush to get into the smaller areas
5) Apply a thin but even coating of lube to the bike chain, chainrings and cassette.
That’s about 1x a week, more or less frequently depending on weather and mileage.
