Bicycle locks and security?

Suppose I ride an $800.00 bicycle to the grocery store and I lock it up. Can someone steal any of the bicycle’s components?

Hm. I consider myself a serious bike rider and I ride to the store often, usually on a bike that is valued about $2500.00 (depending on my mood and where else I might be going).

ANY lock can be defeated regardless of manufacturers claims. The big thing is the amount of time it takes to break it.

My preference is to use a cable lock that has a braided Kevlar core. The reasoning behind this is that cables are difficult to cut with bolt cutters, that if frozen with freon the Kevlar won’t break, and that cable cutters will take a looong time to get through it… usually long enough to get the attention of passers-by. My padlock shank is large enough that most bolt cutters can’t open wide enough and when I lock it I try to locate the lock in a place that would be difficult to access it, like behind a wheel or something.

Yes, if the thief wants to steal parts off of your bike there is little you can do to stop it. Unfortunately most Bike Parts are easier to remove than a good set of hubcaps.
